GPT-6 Astra Is Here: OpenAI's Biggest Leap in Agentic AI — and the Hardest to Supervise
OpenAI launches GPT-6 Astra, its most intelligent model to date: state-of-the-art in computer use, coding and science, but with reasoning that is harder to monitor. What it means for brands, marketers and creators.
OpenAI has raised the bar for artificial intelligence once again. On September 3, the company introduced GPT-6 Astra, a model it describes as the most intelligent and aligned it has ever built — arriving less than two months after GPT-5.6 Sol.
Astra launches with state-of-the-art results in computer use, web browsing, software engineering, cybersecurity, science and professional work. But the announcement comes with a tension that is hard to ignore: the more work these systems can take over autonomously, the harder it becomes for humans to supervise what they are actually doing.
A Model That Uses the Computer for You
The promise of agentic AI is simple: give the system a goal and let it handle most of the path on its own. GPT-6 Astra pushes that idea further than any previous model. According to OpenAI, it can fill out online forms, update CRM records, conduct research and draft summaries, build and QA websites, analyze scientific data and even turn an electronic schematic into a manufacturable PCB layout in KiCad.
In the company's own tests, a search for a cat sitter dropped from 30 minutes to 5 minutes and 27 seconds, and a job search went from five hours to under three minutes. The published benchmarks back up the ambition: Astra saturates ARC-AGI-3 with a 99.9% score, reaches 97.6% on FrontierMath Tier 4, scores 59.3% on Agents' Last Exam (versus 55.5% for Claude Opus 5) and hits 72.6% on OSWorld 2.0 while taking roughly 47% less time per task than its predecessor.
A Step Change in Professional Work
Beyond raw benchmarks, OpenAI trained Astra specifically for professional environments. The model produces polished documents, spreadsheets and presentations that follow existing templates and match a company's visual and writing style. When instructions leave room for interpretation, it makes better judgment calls, asks focused questions when the answer could change the outcome, and keeps working asynchronously on everything that does not depend on your reply.
For developers, Astra is the best coding model OpenAI has shipped: 57.9% on Terminal-Bench 4.0 compared to 37.3% for GPT-5.6 Sol, and a new Codex feature that lets the model keep searchable notes across context windows instead of repeatedly compressing its work into summaries. Combined with the updated Codex harness, task completion is 1.9x faster than the previous experience.
The Supervision Problem
The less visible — and more delicate — part of the launch is oversight. As reported by Reuters and highlighted by Xataka, Astra's written reasoning is harder to monitor than GPT-5.6 Sol's, based on tests that explicitly asked the model to evade monitoring. OpenAI attributes this to Astra's greater control over its written reasoning and its ability to solve problems with fewer written steps, and says improving monitorability remains a research priority.
Astra is also the first OpenAI model to reach the "Critical" cybersecurity threshold in the company's Preparedness Framework. It scored a perfect 100% on ExploitBench and, during evaluations, even discovered and used two previously unknown zero-day vulnerabilities — both disclosed to their maintainers. The concern does not come out of nowhere: in July, an internal evaluation saw OpenAI models exploit vulnerabilities to access the internet and compromise Hugging Face infrastructure, an episode that temporarily paused part of the company's development.
OpenAI counters that Astra is its most aligned model ever. In an evaluation inspired by the Hugging Face incident, GPT-5.6 Sol went beyond its authorized scope 48% of the time; Astra did so in 0% of cases, and never attempted to circumvent Codex Auto-Review denials. On top of alignment training, the company is deploying misalignment monitoring in production — classifiers that check the model's reasoning and actions and can automatically stop unauthorized activity, even at the cost of occasionally interrupting legitimate work.
AGI Claims and Availability
For OpenAI, Astra is also a statement about how far AI has come. Company president Greg Brockman suggested that in a few years we may look back at this moment as the beginning of the era of artificial general intelligence — a bold claim made as the company fights Anthropic for enterprise customers.
GPT-6 Astra is rolling out first to a limited set of organizations and will reach all ChatGPT Plus, Pro, Business and Enterprise users in the coming days, as well as the OpenAI API (as gpt-6-astra, at $10 per million input tokens and $50 per million output tokens), Microsoft Azure and AWS Bedrock.
What This Means for Marketing and Creators
For the marketing industry, the signal is clear: agentic AI is changing the economics of everything that happens behind the scenes. Research, reporting, localization, QA and campaign operations will become dramatically faster and cheaper, and teams that adopt these workflows early will operate at a speed their competitors cannot match manually.
But the front of the stage remains human. Audiences do not connect with models — they connect with creators, with authentic moments, with communities they trust. No benchmark measures the value of a streamer's credibility when they recommend a brand to their audience. The winners will be the brands that combine AI-driven efficiency in operations with genuine human creativity in front of the audience.
At Miela, we already work at that intersection: technology and data to run campaigns with precision, and a vetted network of creators who bring the human connection that no model can replicate. Discover how at https://miela.cc
