OpenAI Launches ChatGPT Images 2.5: Sharper Detail, Precise Editing and 50% Faster Generation
OpenAI's ChatGPT Images 2.5 brings sharper detail, multi-turn precision editing, Sketch, templates and two new API models (Flare and Sunburst). Full breakdown of every feature.
OpenAI has just raised the bar for AI image generation. With more than 3 billion images created every week across ChatGPT Images and the GPT-Image API models, the company has unveiled ChatGPT Images 2.5, its new state-of-the-art image model, promising sharper details, more precise editing and generation up to 50% faster than Images 2.0.
The release is not just a model upgrade. It comes with new product features inside ChatGPT (Sketch, templates, comments and prompt sharing) and two new models for developers in the API. Here is the full breakdown.
What this unlocks for creators
For content creators, Images 2.5 is less about generating pictures and more about removing the production bottleneck. Thumbnails, channel art, merch concepts, sponsored content mockups, localized variants for different markets: the assets that used to require a designer or hours of work now start from a sketch, a template or a reference photo, and get refined through conversation.
Three shifts stand out for creator workflows:
1. Faster iteration: 50% lower latency means more concepts tested per session, and better first drafts mean fewer rounds to a usable asset.
2. Consistency across edits: multi-turn reliability lets a creator build a visual series (a thumbnail set, a merch line, a campaign kit) where every piece stays on-model.
3. Brand-ready output: precision editing keeps logos, products and brand treatments intact while everything around them adapts, which is exactly what sponsored content needs.
The creators who benefit most will be those who treat the tool as a production multiplier for their ideas, not a replacement for them.
Better fidelity to your reference photos
Images 2.5 is significantly better at working from reference photos: subjects look more recognizable, lighting and textures feel more natural, and distinctive features are more likely to carry through when you move a familiar subject into new settings, styles or compositions. OpenAI's own example is telling: a baby portrait converted into a stylized plush-toy version while keeping the likeness intact.
For teams building with the API, this fidelity makes reference-led workflows more reliable, so variations stay anchored to the original source.
Precision editing: change one thing, keep everything else
The model is now better at editing only what you ask for while keeping the rest of the image untouched, even with complex subjects and backgrounds. For developers, this means a user can update a single element (a product, a background, a piece of copy) while preserving the subject, composition and brand treatment around it.
OpenAI published this demo video made of multiple images, showing how the model follows precise editing instructions:
Multi-turn editing consistency
In longer conversations, Images 2.5 follows specific editing instructions more reliably across multiple edits: earlier changes stay consistent and each new edit builds on previous work without degrading image quality over time. That matters in production workflows, where developers need targeted changes without rebuilding the entire asset.
Intelligence and style improvements
Images 2.5 understands complex visual instructions better and translates them into coherent results: images that include real-world information have more accurate content, layouts can be more complex (including transparent backgrounds), and the model reflects requested visual styles more faithfully. OpenAI demonstrated this with a travel infographic generated with accurate real-world content:
Style control also improves, as these examples show: an 80s-style headshot and a series of mid-century modern posters.
Sketch: draw your idea, ChatGPT finishes it
Sometimes the clearest way to explain an idea is to draw it. Sketch is a new feature that lets you draw directly in ChatGPT and use the drawing as a visual guide: sketch the layout of a room or the outline of a design, add a style description, and ChatGPT turns the rough art into a complete image. To try it, type "@Sketch" in ChatGPT.
Templates to start faster
Instead of starting from a blank canvas, ChatGPT now offers templates for popular creative formats like "Poster" or "Merch". You pick a template and add the details: information to convey, design elements, styles.
Share your prompts
When you share an image, you can now include the prompt that created it, so others can run with the same idea using their own photos and details. A small feature with big implications for teams building shared prompt libraries.
Two new models in the API: Flare and Sunburst
For developers, OpenAI is releasing two new image models:
GPT-Image-2.5 Flare brings the quality, editing and speed improvements to the API and is the default choice for most applications, delivering higher-quality images than GPT-Image-2 at 50% lower latency. It fits creator and social content, product experiences, visual search, rapid prototyping and high-volume generation.
GPT-Image-2.5 Sunburst is built for premium visual workflows that benefit from tighter control across edits, like production-ready campaign creative or polished product imagery.
Early partners are enthusiastic. "What impressed us most about GPT-Image-2.5 Flare is how well it understands what not to change. You can make a meaningful edit without losing the character, composition or visual identity of the original image," said Axultan Alimkulov, Head of Product at Higgsfield AI. "And when you combine that level of control with the speed, quality and cost, GPT-Image-2.5 Flare really stands out."
Safety, pricing and availability
Images 2.5 builds on OpenAI's existing safeguards, with checks on prompts and images to prevent harmful outputs, plus C2PA metadata and invisible watermarking to identify AI-generated images. The model is rolling out now to all ChatGPT, ChatGPT Work and Codex users across all tiers, on desktop, mobile and web, with both new models available in the API.
Miela Insight
For marketing and creator teams, this release compresses the creative production cycle even further. The combination that matters most is precision editing plus multi-turn consistency: the ability to take a winning creator asset or product shot and iterate variants per market, platform and format without rebuilding it. That is exactly the workflow behind scaled campaign localization, A/B creative testing and paid amplification of top-performing content.
Tools like Sketch and templates also lower the barrier between the person with the idea and the first visual draft, which speeds up briefing between brands and creators. What remains irreplaceable is the strategy: which creator, which audience, which cultural angle. The model generates the asset; the judgment about what to make and why is still human work.
